Unit 6: Going Shopping

Summary: At the Market

Key points

  • At the market we buy bread, fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.
  • The customer buys; the seller sells.
  • We ask about prices with How much is…? (one thing) and How much are…? (two or more things).
  • We ask politely with I’d like… please.
  • In Tunisia, 1 dinar = 1000 millimes: 2.400 DT = two dinars four hundred.

Rules to remember

One thing
How much is the melon? — It’s 4 dinars.
More things
How much are the tomatoes? — They’re 1 dinar 500 a kilo.
Polite request
I’d like (= I would like) two croissants, please. — What would you like?
-teen / -ty
fifteen (15, stress at the end) / fifty (50, stress at the start); forty has no u.

How to do it

  1. Is it one thing or more?
  2. One ➡️ How much is…? / It’s…
  3. More ➡️ How much are…? / They’re…
  4. Say the price: dinars first, then millimes.

Example
